Nagargunasagar-Srisailam Sanctuary

Located in Andra Pradesh near the Nagarjunasagar reservoir, this is the largest Tiger Reserve in India. The sanctuary has an area of 3568sq.km covering areas of Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and Nalagonda districts. It has a habitat of dry deciduous mixed forests along the River Krishna that cuts through a picturesque gorge of the Nallamalai hills with deep valleys on sides. The climate is hot and arid with a temperature reaching up to 42degrees Celsius in summer (March - June). The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is from October to May.

The fauna includes langur, macaque, tiger, jackal, Bengal fox, leopard, jungle cat, wild dog, wolf, sloth bear, otter, striped hyena, wild boar, muntjac, sambar, spotted deer, flying squirrel etc. The sanctuary has more than 150 species of birds including Grey-horn bill and pea foul. The reptile s include soft-shelled turtles, monitor lizard, python and marsh crocodile.

Guest houses and cottages are available near the temples within the sanctuary. The sanctuary is well connected with state buses. By road it is 130 km from Hyderabad.
